So you watched the Big Broadcast of 1938 with Bob Hope today? I hope so. That was intended. I had asked my sub today to ask you to think about two things when watching the film. First, I wanted you to study the lighting on different scenes. Films are "moving picture" after all and I wanted you to write down here your observations about the lighting in the film. Even if you only go into great detail about a single scene. Lighting is used to set the mood and tone. Did you know that in many of the promotional photos for this film, Bob Hope was photographed using Renaissance lighting?

Then, I wanted you to identify any stereotypical characters in the film. Were there characters that you expected to see or acted as you expected them to? Talk about that too - Thanks and have a very nice holiday break!

Truthfully I didn't really noticed the lighting. I was preoccupied by attempting to figure out the plot, and who the heck was on which boat. Personally I understood the movie to be more about role types then lighting, or at least that is what the sub explained. So like I said I spent more type figuring the roles then the lighting. Out of all the ridiculous stereotypes this movie holds, I noticed most was the clumsy girl. As usually, her role was meant for comic relief, and I personally felt bad for her.

I didn't notice anything special about the lighting, like Caroline said, the sub didn't mention that we should look for that. I saw two stereotypical characters in the scene where the girl's hat blows off in the wind, and the man who works on the ship catches it. (Sorry, I don't remember names..) He is kind of like a "prince charming" and she is the "damsel in distress" character.

While watching the film I can truthfully say that I was not watching the lighting, and I do not remember the sub saying anything about it either. What I do remember is the guy with all of the past wives and now the "new" girlfriend, that is also falling for the guy that runs the ship. the guy that runs the ship kind of portrays a prince charming character, and the lady as some sort of girl that is confused in what she really wants. Other characters that I noticed that were in the film was the guy that nobody likes but are nice to because he is either rich or is of a higher power. This guy was the owner of the ship. There are more sterotypes but those are the ones that stood out most to me. I really enjoyed the movie.

I do have to agree with kailee childs. I'm pretty sure the sub never mentioned anything about the lighting. But the movie was hard to follow, the characters were so different, you had the stuck up rich man, and the diva's i guess you could call them. Really the man that owned the ship stuck out to me the most because he was, well, not a very nice man and he was very conceded. The movie, was semi entertaining, but nothing like the films we have today.
