Bill Gottlieb: Photographer of Jazz Legends

Talk about how the lighting in this portrait effects your interpretation of it. In other words, how does the lighting in this portrait help define the subject? Does it compliment the subject and she hits the high note? Is the lighting bright? Intense? Or is it soft and subtle? How many light sources are there? Where is it coming from?

Periods 1, 3 and 4 only:
Also, from the film, which fact about Gottlieb's life interested you most? Why?

Why do you think his photographs are so important today?

What can we learn by studying his work?

Bonus: Which jazz singer is pictured here?

The lighting in this picture really brings out the subject. The lighting makes her skin glow and just brings out how beautiful she is in this photo. I think that the light could have been brought down just a little bit because i think that it just bounces off her skin just a tad. It looks like there is just a spotlight shining on her that really brings her out. If we study his work we can really learn how to use lighting to make our pictures better and more reflexive of what we re trying to portray.

I thought that the main interesting fact about Gottlieb;s life was that he never intended on being a photographer he wanted to be a writer at first then he ended up making education films and photographer.

I believe that his photographs are so important because they are a part of history they capture a part of history that era of jazz music.

I think that the lighting in this portrait is more soft and intense. I see the lighting as soft because is it highlighting her essence and beauty of her smoother soft looking face. But then I see the lighting as intense because she looks like she is really into her song singing from the heart so it highlights the strenght of her voice. I think that the light is coming from the top and side because under her chin is dark so the light can not be coming from the bottom. I think that because it looks like the lighting is coming from the top and side the there could be two light sources one coming from the top like the stage lights then one coming from the side of the stage.

The lighting of this portrait helps to define the subject by lighting only her, and nothing behind her. The light complements her beauty and makes her shine. and her striking expression of ecstasy while she's completely absorbed in her music. I think that there are two light sources: a light from above, and a light from the side.
I think that it's interesting that Gottlieb produced educational film strips after his career as a jazz photojournalist, because it's just really random, and a completely different direction.
His photos are so important today because they depict important musicians who are old or dead now, preserving their personas.
We can learn lots of things by studying his work, including his picture-taking method of anticipating the exact moment that a great photo can be taken, and about the musicians that he photographed.
The jazz singer is Billy Holiday.

This photo's focus is in the tremendous amount of emotion that is not only captured by Gottlieb, but expressed by Holiday in the picture. The light does nothing but compliment the content and better describe her disposition. The soft white light compliments Billy's natural beauty, as well as almost translating her obviously beautiful voice to picture.

I think that the most remarkable thing about Gottlieb's life is the close relationship to everyone whose picture he took, his ability to be obviously successfully social and at the same time capture photos that could never occur again.

this photos lighting is really nice. her face glows a lot, while the background is dark so it makes you focus on her. The lighting isn't too bright, because if it was her earring would be very shiny. I think the light source is just a big flash. The jazz singer is Billy Holiday.

The lighting helps to show how beautiful and talented she was. It highlights her face. I believe it totally compliments her, it tells a story. I really like how the background is black and the subject is lighter, as if saying not only is she beautiful, she can sing too. There was only one light source, a spotlight on her as she sings to her beloved audience.

I found it intresting how he only was able to take 2 pictures, so you couldn't just randomly take pictures, you had to know what you were doing, and you ad to know how to make the picture work. I think his photos are so important now because he could show us a amazing photo and tell us a story through it. We can learn to try to tell a story with our pictures, and make people analyze it.

I like the lighting in this photo because it really brings out the Billy Holiday's features. Her skin glows bright in the photo in contrast to the dark background. I think there is just one light source, probably a spotlight placed in a carefully selected location. I think his photographs were important because he used lighting to create mood and set an example for the use of light in photography. I found it interesting that Gottlieb produced educational films after his career as a jazz photographer.

The lighting makes me actually hear the note she's singing. The lighting makes her look amazing. It looks like shes in a spotlight on stage in front of millions of people, singing her heart out. If our class were to study his work we would be able to learn how to use lighting better in our photos to make them look better then they already do.

The lighting in this photo makes the the focal point very obvious and puts a light that brings out her natural beauty. The is also soft making her expression more striking.

The part of his life that most interested me was that because he had so little time to take each picture and a limited amount of photographs he had to think about what he wanted to say in his photo and what he wanted people to see.

I think that his photographs are so important today because they are so unique and taught people so much.

We can learn about light and the effect it has on people and how it portray a story in a photograph.

The lighting in this portrait brings out the subjects features perfectly. If it were not lighted this way we wouldn't get the same effect of how the subject is feeling during the moment the photo was taken. It is definatley both bright and intense but is soft at the same time. It's bright and intense because you can hear her voice when you look at the picture and feel all of her emotions. It's also soft because the feeling I get when I look at it is she's singing a love song that brings out her gentle side. There is one light source coming from below her.

What most interested me was the fact that he could only take a limited amount of pictures. I found it interesting because the only pictures he did take were amazing.

I think they're important today because in todays photography we can take as many as we want before we get the perfect one. But when he took his pictures he had to make sure the first one was the best one.

We can learn that to find something you love doing, doesn't always come by searching. Also, that hard work isn't easy.

The lighting is very bright i think. The background behind her is all black and the light just shines on her. I think it compliments her beauty. I think there is more than one light source. There might be one from the top and one facing her. I thought it was interesting how he didn't just take pictures of random people he knew them all in some way or another. His photographs might be important because he really knows how to use lighting and we can learn from him.

I think that the lighting of this portrait really makes the subject pop. Also there is an element of not knowing the color of the womens skin which makes it mysterious and at the same eliminates the whole racist discrimination factor. Yea, it definately compliments the subject as she hits a high note cause I feel like she is really lighted up in the photo and she is probably really lighting it up in her performance. The lighting is bright but not too intense. The lighting looks like its coming from above and stage right. probably making it two light sources.
The fact i liked the most about Gottliebs life was that everything he did was speratic. He didnt mean to become or do anything he was. At first He was involved in Jazz and then his life led him to becoming an educational photojournalist and he just let it happen.
They are so important because he did alot of portraits of jazz and just in general portraits which we can learn alot from today. His expertise were portraits and we can learn alot from them.
Like how and when to take a great picture. What makes a picture great.

This photo is really great. The lighting compliments her tremendously as she belts out a high note. You can see the emotion and energy in her face. The lighting is bright and intense, it complements Billie Holiday's soft face. The lights look like they are coming from above her or directly at her from out direction.
I thought it was interesting that Gottlieb was originally a journalist. He had to buy his own camera and start from scratch. I think the photographs are important because they set precedents for the way photographers photograph people today. We can learn how to take nice pictures by studying his work.

ntThe lighting in this photograph really brings out the ladies face as she is singing. I think the lighting in this photo and I think that it compliments the subject. I don't the lighting is bright but its not so bright that it ruins the pictures. It looks like there is only one light source like a spotlight or something shinning down on the lady.
The fact that I thought was most interesting that he produced educational films after his career as a photojournalist because those are totally different.
I think his photos are so important today because everyone loved him back then and he took really good photos of people.

The lighting makes me enjoy the photos. The light makes the subject look much more dramatic and shows details. For example looking at the pictures of the drummers you can tell that they are very 3D. Also the man on the lamp post pleases my eye. I like the strong lighting. His photographs are important today because he sets a very important precedent for future artist on the cameras. Not only did he did he make great art but he made Jazz music look amazing.

I like how the light shows a contrast between the singer,Billy Holiday and makes her satnd out. The part of her that really stands out is her face but I really like how her hair blends into the background. It also really brings out the action of her singing. I thinkt he light source is coming mostly fromthe bottom because of the way shadows highlight her face. I find it fascinating how he used different lighting in his photographs to send different messages to his readers, it seems genious to me.
What I find most interesting about some of his photos was when he was doing the mirror dressing room photos because they were different from what most of his other photos were. They tell a different story about the the jazz artist. A tale that you never get to see because hey don't show it.

The lighting in this photo helps define the the subject by showing her feelings for jazz and music. Yes it compliments the subject because it shows her feelings for jazz and how much she loves music. The lighting is bright but some of it has some dark areas to. There is about one light source and its coming from the left side of her face.

The lighting of the photo emphasizes her natural beauty as well as the intensity of her voice. The lighting is soft, and yet contrasts the dark background to create a strong result. It appears that there is one source of light that comes directing from the side, so that it illuminates the right side of her face without casting unattractive shadows on the other side, and aimed downward creating subtle shadows under her chin.

Today, his photos are influential in both the aesthetic aspects of them, as well as the history of music he has captured in his art. By studying these photos, we can learn a lot about his use of natural lighting to compliment the candid photos of his subjects.

It looks like there are maybe two light sources. it is coming from the side of the face and in front of the face. His photographs are important today because he is now dead and the pictures are really really good. The lighting in this picture is so important because it highlights her cheek bones an jaw line as her mouth is open, assuming she is hitting the high note. The light compliments this picture so well because you feel like it just suits her perfectly. It is soft, but at the same time it is one of the strongest elements in the picture. It appears there are two light sources, one from 1 and another around 6.
By studying his work, we can learn about a time before ours. We can witness the emotion that is not around today in most musicians.

I think that the lighting in this photo is really good, it brings out her beauty. i think that the lighting in this photo compliments her facial features. The lighting seems to be just a little bit to bright, if it was toned down a little bit i think it would be perfect. it seems that there is only one source of lighting shining down on her, that source of light seems to be a stage spotlight.

I think the lighting and black and white contrast work well together in this. The lighting creates shadows and the black and white contrast emphasises the shadows. Also, the expression on her is dramatic as it is, so the lighting adds more drama to it. Its weird how Gottield went from taking pictures of jazz people to making educational films because it just seems like direct opposites. kinda =] The jazzy lady boss in this picture is Billy Holiday, obvi.

From looking at this picture i would say there is only one light source at 10-11 O'clock. This picture among others can teach us alot about lighting and how it can create a better picture. an interesting thing about Gottlieb is that Gottlieb was drafted into the Army Air Corps in 1943, and he served as a photo officer and as a classifications officer. The lighting in this photo brings out just the subject. It emphasizes her, and only her. The light is very intense, and directly on her, thus darkening out the rest of the scenery. Yes, I believe it does compliment her as she hits the high note. The lighting is extremely bright, and intense. There is one light source at about 10:30.

It seems that a portrait always has the appearance of being in black and white. The darkness around the shape of the face sharpens it almost. It compliments the face giving it god skin tone, almost looking like she is glowing. The lighting is intense so that the background in completely black and the only subject is the woman singing. There are many light sources hitting the face to give it that extreme light effect. It looks like the light source is coming from the top left hand corner. Gottlieb's photographs are so important to today because it expresses a story that the picture is trying to protray. It's intense light shows a harsh environment.

This photo really is good because of the vast value that has come out through the black and white. Black and white does so much for a picture it really changes the photo and looks more lively and real. The emotion from the singer also comes forth and makes te photo brilliant.

The lighting in this photograph is extremely dramatic, it makes her face stand out very vividly and really enhances the emotion on her face, its like you can see the note that she is singing just through the emotion on her face. It looks like there is only one light source coming down diagonally from in front of her.

I thought that it was fascinating how respected Gottlieb was, he could walk into a jazz club and the world famous performers would do whatever he wanted them to do because they knew he would take a good photograph. Also I thought it was interesting how spontaneous his photographs were. They were always relatively candid and he really captured the emotions of the various performances he attended. His photographs are so important because he captured the musicians in their natural element, not in a studio or in a manipulated environment. We can learn about how to use lighting to increase the drama in a picture.

The lighting in this photo really frames the person's face. It helps you focus on them more, if the light was duller then she wouldn't stand out as well as she does. Yes, she's pretty much the whole photo but I mean like, the light just draws you to her face and her dramatic pose that was captured in this. By the looks of it there is two light sources, one coming from her top left and her bottom left. To me, the light seems soft hence why it frames her face and brings complete attention to her.

His photos are important because they captured the very soul of jazz, the dramatic poses were the key to EVERYTHING back then with photos, you got one chance and that was it, he waited and also got the picture he badly wanted. What we can learn from he is how to get a good use of light to really enhance photos making them have more of a "voice" than without the light.

As for the fact about Bill's life, I didn't really watch the movie, I fell asleep but what I do remember is that he didn't want to be a photographer at first, he wanted to be a writer but he had to adapt to changing times since his photographer for his work was fired due to money problems and he had to learn to use a camera on his own which led to all this stuff and amazing photos that were taken. I just thought that was interesting because he completely changed his work style to keep his job alive.
